Although the Government has made it clear that it will not sanction mineral exploration in the Cockpit Country, residents of a number of communities in that section of Trelawny have been relocated, reportedly by miners who have bought land and have already started digging.
These reports fly in the face of a recent declaration by Minister of Finance, Omar Davies. who stated unequivocably: "I can tell you that there is no chance that there will ever be approval [for renewal of exclusive prospecting license]... So let us get that out of the way," Meanwhile, Minister Buchana, who's portfolio includes bauxite and alumina production, refused to address the issue when asked, saying "We are not going to the cockpit this evening.
