Who We Are

JEAN is a network of groups and individuals working together to protect Jamaica's environment through advocacy and information sharing.

WHAT WE DO

We communicate regularly by e-mail to discuss matters of concern to all of us, we meet from time to time in a different part of the island, we share information, we support each other, we develop advocacy campaigns, we attend public meetings, we seek to resolve environmental conflicts, we liaise with government agencies, the private sector and civil society on environmental issues, we attempt to influence environmental policy, we receive complaints from the public and determine whether the network can help and how.

WHO CAN JOIN

Anyone who is concerned about the need for environmental conservation in Jamaica and is willing to endorse or participate in collective advocacy efforts relating to the group's priority issues can join. We welcome non-governmental organizations (NGOs), community-based organizations (CBOs), private sector organizations or individuals. Communication is mainly by e-mail so you should have access to a computer.

IS THERE A COST?

There is no cost to join JEAN. Members are required to fund their own attendance at meetings and their participation in any JEAN activities.

IS THERE A BOARD OF DIRECTORS OR MANAGEMENT STRUCTURE?

JEAN has no Board of Directors, management structure or hierarchy. Chairmanship and location of each meeting is rotated. Currently, the Jamaica Environment Trust operates as a secretariat, but it is anticipated that other groups will assume this function in rotation. JEAN's e-mail list is administered by JET with assistance from Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide (E-LAW).

HOW DO I JOIN?

If you are interested in joining the network, please send a few sentences about yourself and/or your group's area(s) of interest here. Admission is by nomination (by an existing member) and the consensus of the other members. You will be given a short agreement to sign and then you will be added to our e-mail list.
