JEAN RAISES
CONCERNS ABOUT FALMOUTH CRUISE SHIP DEVELOPMENT
In
2007, the Government of Jamaica announced the construction of a cruise ship
pier in Falmouth on Jamaica's north coast, to accommodate very large cruise
ships. A joint venture between the GOJ and Royal Caribbean, this
development would require extensive dredging, removal of coral reefs, wetlands
and sea grass beds, the relocation of local people in the town of Falmouth and
the relocation of the 100-year-old fishing beach. The development also
poses potentially serious impacts to the luminescent lagoon at Glistening
Waters. The plans were the subject of an Environmental Impact Assessment,
and this was reviewed by several members of JEAN.
JEAN
had several substantive concerns about the EIA. The environmental permit
was issued in February 2008, and since then, members of JEAN have been seeking
clarification on details of the development without success.

The Jamaica Environmental Advocacy Network, in association with the Cockpit Country Stakeholders Group is appealing to the Government of Jamaica NOT TO ALLOW prospecting or mining in the Cockpit Country or its immediate environs.
Cockpit Country is the largest remaining primary forest in Jamaica. It is a last refuge for indigenous animals and plants increasingly displaced by human-associated development. It is an internationally-recognized biological treasure area, sustains the water supply of most of western Jamaica, and contributes significantly to the sustainability of the critical tourism sector.
We are urging the Government of Jamaica to take steps to declare the
Cockpit Country a Protected National Area AS A MATTER OF PRIORITY, as
stipulated in the 1997 Policy for a National System of Protected Areas
in Jamaica.
